Glossary
This platform lives on technical language. For engineers it goes without saying; for search and for readers from adjacent fields it does not. Hence here the terms that carry, each in two sentences.

Twenty terms that carry on this platform
Beerstone
Mineral-organic deposit in brewery and beverage systems, mainly from calcium, oxalate and protein compounds. It adheres firmly and can only be removed by targeted cleaning.
Bore intersection
The point at which two drilled channels meet inside a component. A burr forms there, and no mechanical tool gets there — not because it would be too large, but because no path leads there.
Burr root
The point at which a burr attaches to the component — often at the intersection of two bores. It is not the burr itself that is the actual problem, but its root, because it is often not reachable mechanically.
Cascade rinsing system
Multi-stage rinsing in which the water travels in counterflow from the cleanest to the dirtiest stage. This saves fresh water without lowering the rinsing quality.
Continuous-flow principle
Machine type in which the component passes through successive zones instead of remaining in a chamber — the parts do not wait, they flow. It comes into question where production demands cycles in the order of seconds and a continuous flow in the line.
Cycle time
The time available per component or batch. For the system design, the order of magnitude decides, not the number of seconds: If several minutes per cycle are permissible, a chamber cleaning system comes into question; if production demands cycles in seconds, rather a continuous or rotary indexing cleaning system.
Deionized water (DI water)
Deionized (fully demineralized) water from which dissolved salts have been removed. It is used where freedom from spots and residues or high technical cleanliness is required.
Main time and auxiliary time
Main time is the actual processing, auxiliary time everything around it — loading and unloading, setup. In the rotary indexing principle, loading and unloading run parallel to processing, so that the auxiliary time drops out of the cycle.
Parts cleaning system, parts washer
Different names for the same machine — the terms are not uniform in the market. Parts washer, cleaning system, component cleaning, cleaning machine and cleaning technology are also widespread. ITR consistently writes parts cleaning system; the discipline is called industrial parts cleaning, because cleaning alone also denotes building and tank cleaning.
Passivation
Creation or preservation of a thin, protective surface layer that protects the component from corrosion. It is often a requirement on the cleaning process, not only on a subsequent step.
Process reliability
The ability of a system to reach the required quality permanently and reproducibly in the intended operation — not once at acceptance, but in every shift.
Residual burr
The burr remaining after deburring. It is one of two results to be verified separately — the other is the residual contamination.
Residual contamination
The contamination remaining on the component after cleaning, as particulate or filmic contamination. It is measured, not inspected by eye — via the number, size and mass of the particles.
Rotary indexing principle
Machine type with fixed process stations in which loading and unloading take place at a single position — parallel to processing, so that the auxiliary time drops out of the cycle. This requires a defined production process with a constant process sequence. In the house, both rotary indexing cleaning and rotary indexing water jet deburring systems carry the abbreviation “RT”, which is why it is never used unqualified.
Spray shadow
Areas of a component that are not directly reached by the process medium during spray cleaning because they lie concealed. The spray shadow is not a weakness of the system, but a property of the method — and a reason to clean complex parts by immersion or flooding.
Technical cleanliness
A defined, measurable state of cleanliness per standard, expressed via particle count and size. “Clean” is thus not a sight, but a verifiable value.
Vapor condenser
Subassembly that precipitates rising vapors and returns the condensate into the process instead of discharging it via a stack. It reduces energy and water consumption.
VDA 19.1 and ISO 16232
The relevant standards for the inspection of the technical cleanliness of function-relevant components. They define how particles are extracted from the component and subsequently analyzed, so that a cleanliness value is comparable and repeatable.
Vertical integration
The share of value creation that arises in our own house. At ITR, all trades of a system lie in one place — design engineering, control cabinet manufacturing, sheet metal fabrication, programming, assembly, documentation and service.
Workpiece fixture
The device that holds the component in the process — also parts carrier or workpiece carrier. It is not an accessory, but an essential part of the system concept: Its design engineering helps determine where spray shadow arises and whether the nozzles reach the component.
