Two open treatment tanks of an immersion cleaning system side by side: the sliding lids are moved aside, green sealing strips lie on the tank rims, in the front tank a bar with blue nozzles; above it the yellow frame of the gantry carriage, on the right the media routing with pipe bends and shut-off valves

When no jet gets there any more, the part has to go into the medium.

Immersion Cleaning

Blind holes, cross-drilled holes, branched internal channels: that is exactly where the residual contamination sits that a directed jet does not reach. Immersion is used when the workpiece has to go fully into the process medium.

1 · The challenge

Where spraying fails at the spray shadow

The more complex a component, the more places there are that a directed jet does not reach.

Blind holes, cross-drilled holes, branched internal channels. But that is exactly where the residual contamination sits that is measured later — and exactly where spraying fails at the spray shadow.

2 · Engineering considerations

Immersion is used when the workpiece has to go fully into the medium

That is the decisive difference from flooding: it is not the process medium that is guided around the component, but the component that is submerged in the medium — that way the liquid also reaches areas no jet can aim at.

Immersion is suited to complex components with many bores and many blind holes. The more complex the geometry, the sooner the decision falls on immersion processes.

Ultrasonic cleaning as an option

Ultrasonic cleaning is an option, not a method of its own — and it is used predominantly together with immersion and flooding processes. It supplements immersion where pure wetting is not enough, but does not replace it.

Whether ultrasonic cleaning makes sense in the specific case is decided by the system design. The exact limits of use are project-specific with us — there is no blanket rule.

No immersion without a lifting mechanism: the gantry guides the workpiece carrier vertically into the tank and out again. How fast it does that is part of the system design — lifting out too fast carries process medium out.

3 · Immersion or flooding?

These two are confused most often

It is not the type of part that decides, but the process design.

Tauchen

Decisive
The workpiece has to go fully into the medium

Flooding

Decisive
The process medium can be guided with high volume over and around the workpiece
Bulk parts are not a distinguishing feature — they can go into both processes. What matters are the process requirement and the workpiece fixture. This comparison is a guide, not a configurator.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about immersion cleaning

How are blind holes cleaned?

Via full immersion instead of a directed jet. A blind hole is one of the places a jet does not reach — there spraying fails at the spray shadow, and that is exactly where the residual contamination sits that is measured later. The more complex the geometry and the more blind holes, the sooner the decision falls on an immersion process.

Applications

One task on which this method is decided

One worked-out task names immersion cleaning as a possible method. What tips the balance in it is on its own page.

Each case sets out the design factors, the possible system concepts and the methods in detail — here you only find what it is about.

Cross-drilled holes and blind holes

Blind holes and cross-drilled holes are exactly the places a spray jet does not reach: it hits what it sees.

This case does not inevitably lead to immersion cleaning. Which method it becomes arises from the interplay of the design factors — the method is the result of the system design, not its starting point.
