1 · The challenge

The channel is measured, not the surface

Here, surface methods come up against a simple limit: they treat the surface, not the channel — and that is where the residual contamination sits that is measured later.

Inside, an engine block or a gearbox housing is a channel system: many bores, through-holes, partly blind holes. Viewed from the outside, the part is clean quickly — inside, the residual contamination stays on in the channels.

2 · Engineering considerations

Targeted instead of over the surface

In lance technology, the process medium is guided in a targeted way into the individual bore instead of over the surface of the component. That shifts the action from the surface into the geometry — to where chips, oil and emulsion actually sit.

But targeted instead of over the surface also means: every lance has to fit the bore and hit it reliably. The lance arrangement is therefore designed for the specific component — it is not an accessory but part of the design engineering. If the component changes, the arrangement changes.

3 · Relation to other methods

Supplement, not replacement

Lance technology does not replace surface cleaning but supplements it: the surface is sprayed or flooded, the bores are lanced.

In practice that is often a combined process in the same system.

4 · Where the method is used

The engine block as an example

Which machine type it becomes is decided by geometry, production volume, cycle time and cleaning requirement together.

The typical example is large engine blocks: depending on production volume and cycle, they are cleaned either in a chamber cleaning system with lance technology or in a continuous cleaning system.
