Spray Cleaning

On many components the dirt sits on accessible outer surfaces — oil, emulsion, chips and dust can then be removed over the surface without submerging the part in a medium. The only question is whether every relevant surface really is reachable.

1 · The challenge

Reachability decides, not the wish

Oil, emulsion, chips and dust can be removed over the surface as long as the component does not have to be submerged in a medium. For degreasing the same applies as for any other contamination: whether every relevant surface really is reachable is decided not by the wish but by the geometry.

2 · Engineering considerations

Spraying for simple geometries — with a property you have to know

Spraying is suited to simple part geometries with few bores and few blind holes. The advantage is the direct, directed action: the process medium hits the surface with energy and removes the contamination mechanically. Whether that turns into a spray cleaning system as a configuration of its own, or spraying remains one stage in a multi-stage system, is decided by the task — not by the method.

Spray shadow — the property you have to know

Spraying creates a spray shadow: areas that lie hidden are not reached directly by the jet. That is not a weakness of the system but a property of the method — and it belongs in the decision, not in the fine print.

Its effectiveness therefore depends directly on the workpiece fixture: how the component is held and oriented co-determines where a spray shadow forms and whether the nozzles are accessible.

3 · When something else is the better fit

Spraying does not rule out other methods

Whether spraying is enough is decided by the part geometry. Under other conditions another method is the better fit — often in combination, too.

Spraying and other methods are not mutually exclusive. Often they are combined: sprayed where the surface is accessible, immersed or flooded where it is not.

From the single method to the combined system

Depending on the task, spraying processes run in chamber, continuous or rotary indexing cleaning systems — and in the spray-immersion cleaning system APOLLO combined with immersion: accessible surfaces are sprayed, hard-to-reach ones immersed.
